Why I hate the... Audi TT
For one sports-car purist the TT was a lamentable triumph of form over function

First off, I hated the concept: the fat-face retro chic got seriously on my nerves.
Then I hated the reaction to the shape: chunky Audi pops out of womb and miraculously transcends conventional styling language to become haute couture (Eh? What about 911, Daytona, Rover SD1?). Then I hated the emerging style gurus coaxed from hibernation by this auto-deity into putrid chat (sorry, discourse) on form and non-sense. Pillocks all of them. And then, even we at Autocar got swept up by the hype: "Audi builds a Porsche" we told the world, when we first drove the thing.
No, it hadn't. Audi doesn't do sports cars. Never has, and on current evidence never will. Rats - correction and apology to Audiphiles: it did knock out Ur-Quattro and Stumpy Quattro in the early '80s. But that's all too long ago to matter.
Here's the reason for my rage. 1 don't understand style in the conventional sense;
the way that someone just looks at something and, bingo! it trips their cool meter. Okay, I'm not an alien, 1 do just like the shape of some objects, but in my world beauty is a product of, and not an adjunct to, ability. And, for me, credibility is the determining factor of cool. So I worship the 911 because of what it can do. It concentrates my mind on the shape and bangs home the reality: function dictates this car's form. Therefore, it's legit.
The TT isn't. It's Golf-dressed-as-Porsche, an optical illusion deviously designed to con punters into thinking it's a bespoke sportster. Illusion, because it embraces a technical language that's tantamount to blasphemy in sports car terms: platform sharing, four cylinders, turbocharger and four-wheel-drive. Oh, and before you chime in with a '996-is-nothing-more-than-a-Boxster' jibe, just ponder which product you'd rather share your guts with: flabby hatch or the world's best roadster. Quite.
Then it was launched and I had to drive one. Hmmm. Neurotic ride, a dollop of late '80s turbo lag, and are-the-front-toe-arms-made-of-rhubarb? steering.
Where was the driver interaction, the joy, the effervescence? I wanted to get out and walk.
And the next style-obsessive keen to talk Bauhaus simplicity should try sticking a mate in the back seats. The thing's a packaging joke. Yes, some of the detailing is sweet -
plenty of twee ally slabs, switches and knobs. But, ultimately, it's just decorative tat: fodder for window shoppers that doesn't add anything except excess mass.
For the final insult, you don't even need to go as far as the obvious Porsche comparison.
There's something working away at exposing the TT's sham from inside the family home: kid-brother S3. Cheaper, sweeter and to my eyes better looking, it's delicate where the TT is harsh and understands the complexities of dynamic fun. It proves that Audi can make performance cars, but hasn't yet grasped the sports-car nettle.

Però la Roadster a me intrippa un casino!

la roadster ion effetti piace anche a me.
la Coupè ha il tetto direi 3-4 cm troppo basso.
Io credo che sarebbe bastato metterci il 2.8 V6 da 204 cv e già sarebbe stata diversa, "leggende metropolitane" riferiscono che il 1.8T, pompato a 225 cv abbia dei consumi esagerati, tipo 5-6 km/l nell'uso normale.
Però, non dimentichiamoci quando si dice "Golf vestita da Porsche", che le prime Porsche ..quello erano.."Maggiolini vestiti da barchette all'italiana"...

Mha... la TT a volte mi piace e volte mi fa schifo... dipende dall'umore.

Comunque, andro' controcorrente, ma preferisco il coupè al cabrio !

Concordo con Alura: la roadster e' la 313 di Paperino, un vero  cesso estetico. Per le prestazioni non so. Io di persona non l'ho mai provata, ci sono solo salito da fermo e una volta ho disintegrato col biturbo in accelerazione due "tipi da spiaggia" sul roadster (Che male sono rimasti...). Comunque quelli che l'hanno provata dicono che tutto sommato fa pieta'. Per lo meno non da' l'impressione di tirare. L'ultimo che conosco che l'ha comprata perche' c'aveva questa idea fissa, e' rimasto molto deluso. Se potesse tornare indietro ha detto che non la ricomprerebbe di certo.  Mah......

Bah..... anche a me la roadstar prende parecchio...... devo dire che mi pare un gran bel ferro.... Per quanto riguarda il tiro... a mio avviso dipende dalla versione... se è il 225 quattro... mah.... non sono poi tanto convinto che "non tiri" certo..... se prendi la 150 cv..... allora... Mauringhio con Bitu puoi confrontarti tranquillamente col 225 senza timore di "svernuiciature"..... l'unica è che potresti perdere in accelerazione essendo quella comunque una TI

Bah.. a me la TT Coupè piace ma non in maniera tale da convincermi a preferirla a una Impreza STI dato che costano lo stesso tanto.. e non la preferirei nemmeno a una S2000.. o a una Focus RS.. insomma.. solo un bel sopramobile. Che sia lenta non direi.. Auto provò la 180cv a trazione anteriore e ne parlò un gran bene su tutti i fronti.. il 225 deve essere ancora meglio anche se probabilmente la coppia molto spalmata affievolisce la sensazione di spinta..

Beh, a me la Coupè non dispiace per niente. La roadster non mi esalta, perchè a quel punto per quella cifra ci sono in gire certe auto di Monaco che han 4 posti.

Un calcione in culo è quello che voglio da una "sportiva"..

Per un calcione nel culo non serve spendere 40.000¤ per una TT! Basta chiedere al primo che trovi per strada..

Anche io odio o amo la TT a seconda dell'umore!...io personalemente ho provato la 180cv TA e quanto a dinamica non mi è sembrato quel cesso che dicono...anzi!!sterzo diretto e preciso, cambio perfetto, dei bei freni e tenuta notevole (aveva i cerchi da17)......la stabilità non l'ho provata + di tanto...ma ho affrontanto un curvone a 150 in rilascio senza tanti problemi!quello che mi ha deluso è stato il motore....troppo progressivo, non si sente il calcio del turbo, non ha un bel rumore......ecc ecc

posso solo dire che un mio amico ha la tt 225 quattro e dai 200 ai 230 schizza via che manco te ne accorgi... a monza nn è che ce n'erano tante di altre macchine che facevano le furbe.....

A me la TT dice poco, però questo articolo non mi piace per nulla, è pieno di faziosità e di opinioni personali. Va bene per chiacchere da bar, non va bene per una rivista seria.
