New Ford Mustang

Performance car aficionados made a bee-line for the Ford stand at this week's Detroit Motor Show for a first look at the new Mustang.

Designed by a team working under styling chief J Mays, the two-seater is beefier than ever and draws inspiration from classic roadsters of yesteryear. The high waistline and low roll bar give a wide stance, while the inset exhausts are a new Mustang feature. The large alloys are also likely to stay, complemented by the flared arches.

An aluminium bonnet and bootlid will keep weight down, while performance will be true to the Mustang tradition thanks to a range of large engines. A base model will be available with a 215bhp 3.0-litre V6, but high-performance versions will draw on V8s for their power. The 4.6 unit found in the current model will be tuned to produce 280bhp, while the flagship Cobra is rumoured to come with 400bhp. Buyers of range-topping Mustangs will also have the option of a six-speed sequential box with a steering column-mounted paddle-shift selector system.

The Mustang was originally planned to go on sale in the US in spring 2004, but delays have put the project back to the autumn. Limited numbers will ultimately be available here, but only in left-hand-drive form. A coupé edition is also under development. Dan Strong

Bah.. appena l'ho vista ho detto ad alta voce "che cagata!"   Poi l'ho rivista bene e devo dire che non è poi così male.. il muso è in effetti "particolare" ma la coda è quanto meno caratteristica e richiama notevolmente la mitica Mustang degli anni '60.. Poi ha anche 408cv e 525nm

Su quello non ci piove Giorgio! Io cmq apprezzo fino a un certo punto questi richiami al passato.. saranno anche riusciti (vedi Mini) però dimostrano che i designer non hanno poi tanta fantasia..
