Vauxhall Monaro CV8 300

They said it would come if we asked for it, and here it is. Following an enthusiastic response from visitors to the British Motor Show, Vauxhall was left with no choice but to give the people what they want - the new Monaro. The 5.7-litre V8 star is built by Australian sister firm, Holden, and was shown at the NEC in October - badged as a Vauxhall - to gauge demand among UK buyers.

To prove it's serious, the Luton company has brought over this prototype to hone the chassis characteristics and bring the road manners in line with our potholed highways - and we jumped at the chance to get behind the wheel. Before we could get that far, though, we had to come to terms with the size of the newcomer. The Monaro has a truly imposing girth, its bulging body hiding the humble underpinnings of the Omega.

In the same vein as the Holden HSV GTS saloon, the Monaro isn't unattractive, despite its dimensions. It's a similar story inside, with stock Holden parts featuring in the well equipped cabin. We're not sure the bright trim will suit British tastes, though. It's only when you turn the key that you realise what this car is all about. In true Down Under style, capacity comes before complexity. A massive 5.7 litres are displaced - but don't expect supercar power output.

The 302bhp total seems acceptable, but it's only 53bhp per litre, which is less than a Smart City Coupé! Don't be disappointed, though - hit the throttle and the thrust proves impressive. The 0-60mph dash is covered in 6.8 seconds, and once the lump is spinning at high revs, it makes the 1,640kg coupé fly.

Those who prefer a more relaxed power delivery will be disappointed by the lazy low-down responses, but refinement is excellent. A 402bhp version is also on the cards for those after more grunt. Yet the biggest surprise comes not with the speedometer, but the fuel gauge. According to official figures, the Vauxhall returns 28.5mpg - very impressive considering the meaty engine.

Drive the Monaro on narrow roads here and you soon realise they do things bigger in Australia - it feels unwieldy. There's lots of grip, which is reassuring when feeding power to the rear wheels, but resistance to changes in direction discourages swift progress. The gearbox doesn't like being rushed, and isn't helped by the long-travel clutch. But don't underestimate the car's pace on fast roads. At 70mph in sixth, the V8 is barely above idle. The ride is firm, yet forgiving enough for comfortable cruising.

The new coupé's trump card could be its price. Back in Oz, it weighs in at about £20,000, and here it's likely to cost around £26,000 - fantastic for a 5.7-litre muscle car. A Renault Avantime V6 would give you the same kind of exclusivity, but won't match the Monaro's performance, while BMW's 330Ci is a more accomplished, if blander, package.

So although the Monaro will have only limited appeal in the UK, it won't harm Vauxhall's image, and will give a few owners a whole lot of fun. When will it arrive? We're Holden our breath... Chris Thorp

Non vedo perchè importare con marchio Vauxhall pari pari la HSV GTS! Tra l'altro, la macchina neanche mi dispiace però:

La foto mi sembra chiara...c'è scritto "km/h" nel tachimetro e anche il contakm segna "km"...anche a me suona strano,ma le immagini parlan chiaro...

Sul tachimetro è scritto m/h, se voi vedete pure la k è perchè c'è un riflesso di luce, ma poi vi sembra possibile che un' auto sportiva con 300 CV abbia un tale limite sul tachimetro?

io davanti alla m vedo una k che pare cancellata... cmq che senso ha un tachimetro del genere? volete dire che è limitata a quella velocità? o più assurdamente che in lungo viaggia quanto una punto hgt? Con 302 cv? Mah!

Probabilmente han ragione Carlo e Christian...guardando bene non è una k ma un riflesso. E' indubbio però che il contakm (che tra l'altro è quello della Mondeo!!!) indichi i km A questo punto però mi chiedo...220 mph?!E che è,lo shuttle?!

Tenuto conto che la diablo fa 202 mph di massima e la McLaren F1 232.........direi che sarebbe un miracolo della meccanica con solo 300 cv......

Ho pensato pure io al fatto che 200 miglia circa (il fondo scala è quasi sempre di "bellezza") fossero troppe... ma allo stesso tempo 200 km/h sono un tubo! Boh... una cosa solo è certa, cmq sia sto tachimetro è una cacata.
