Michael Schumacher won the U.S. Grand Prix, as he almost always does. Rubens Barrichello made it a Ferrari 1-2 finish with nothing very new about that, either. But the result, as Ferrari boss Jean Todt said, was achieved, “Under very unusual circumstances. To put it in boxing terms,” Ferrari’s general manager went on, “Ferrari and Bridgestone won with a technical knock-out.”

No argument there. On the podium with Schumacher and Barrichello was Jordan’s Tiago Monteiro, followed in by his teammate Narain Karthikeyan, then the Minardis of Christian Albers and Patrick Friesacher.

There were only six finishers.

The problem was, of course, that there had only been six starters. At the end of the formation lap, 14 cars, all of them on Michelin tires, peeled off into the pit lane. Engines were shut down and the cars pushed into their respective garages. McLaren’s Juan Montoya sat in tears; this was as good as a home race for the Colombian, as thousands of native fans traveled to cheer on their idol (each having paid at least $100 per person just to enter the Speedway grounds). Only now had they begun to understand they had wasted time and money at the sixth USGP in Indianapolis.

Briefly, the fans were so stunned at the sight of only six cars on the grid that there was no discernible reaction. Then they got the message. Not surprisingly, they showed their wrath, some mildly with a thumbs-down, a few more overtly by throwing plastic bottles; on lap six, Barrichello ran over one, without damage to his tires.

Non concordo, di quanto avrebbero dovuto ridurla?? Di 30, 90 o 150 kmh? Poi che sarebbe successo in occasione dei doppiaggi da parte di gommati Bridgestone? Le curve vanno fatte alla massima velocità possibile, non diminuendo la velocità a causa di possibili rotture meccaniche...
Secondo me è stata fatta l'unica cosa fattibile, se i team Michelin sono scontenti per non aver potuto disputare la gara, è solo colpa loro, la FIA dice chiaramente che deve esserci, tra le gomme portate ai GP, un tipo di gomme sicure, non le han portate e han paura che succeda qualcosa, fanno bene a non correre!

Se il problema era dal 13°giro in poi avrebbero dovuto decidere di cambiare le gomme ogni 10 giri... Il problema si sarebbe risolto... In ogni caso il succo vero sta in quella fantomatica lettera che la Michelin ha spedito ai team...

Ancora!!! Mica la Michelin sapeva con certezza il giro in cui le gomme sarebbero esplose!!! Se ne fosse scoppiata una dopo 2 giri e ci fosse scappato il morto, magari sugli spalti, colpito da un pezzo di carbonio??? Altro che calo d'immagine per la F1, qualcuno sarebbe andato nel braccio della morte!
Poi non c'eran abbastanza gomme per fare i 5 stop necessari eventualmente a mantenere un certo margine di sicurezza.... si sarebbe trattato di 70 gomme posteriori sx, non portano così tanti treni...

The Michelin teams seemed unable to understand that this would have been grossly unfair as well as contrary to the rules. The Bridgestone teams had suitable tyres. They did not need to slow down. The Michelin teams’ lack of speed through turn 13 would have been a direct result of inferior equipment, as often happens in Formula One. It must also be remembered that the FIA wrote to all of the teams and both tyre manufacturers on June 1, 2005, to emphasise that “tyres should be built to be reliable under all circumstances”.
