Daimler-Chrysler's biggest off-roader, the Mercedes G-Class, will get a replacement in the 2007 model year in North America.

The current G has been on the market an incredible 25 years. Again and again it was updated by adding electronic luxury like power windows, power steering, air-conditioning, and even airbags. Inside, the plain ute was updated with polished wood panelling and leather seats. The most expensive is the current AMG version, which sells surprisingly well these days, in particular in the United States.

Now, however, Daimler-Chrysler has finally planned to end the current G's career. A replacement will be released in 2006.

Like the new Mercedes ML and R-Class, which were shown at the Detroit auto show last week, the next G-Class will be produced in the United States at the Alabama DaimlerChrysler plant.

Power will come from two diesels: a 231-hp V-6 and a 300-hp V-8. Two new V-8 gas engines - a 326-hp 4.6-liter and a 408-hp, 5.5-liter - will be available. The AMG version is rumored to deliver 460 hp.

In order not to disappoint fans of the rugged 4x4, Daimler Chrysler has developed a special top-of-the-line off-road package for the new G.

diciamo la verità sono una st......ta gli scarichi laterali ma mi esaltano quando fa il ritrono di fiamma e quando li senti tuonare  li!!!

G-CLASS COMES IN FROM COLD
Caught cold-weather testing in the mag this week, the Merc G-Class is the next model in Mercedes' avalanche of new products - and it's a classic reborn.

The chunky crossover borrows much of its underpinnings - including the all-wheel-drive chassis - from the M, creating a spacious high-riding estate. Replacing the boxy and agricultural G-Wagen off-roader, the newcomer will be far more luxurious and refined.

Designers are promising the G's cabin will be packed with clever ideas and storage features, complemented by high-standard safety kit. However, the key attraction will be its ability to carry seven passengers plus luggage. That puts the car head-to-head with Land Rover's new Discovery.

The big Mercedes features a clever third row of seats. When not in use, the two rearmost chairs individually fold flat into the boot floor. Each will have its own integrated belts and ISOFIX child seat mounting points.

When the G-Class arrives in the UK next year, Mercedes will offer a choice of four engines, including a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel developing either 190bhp or 224bhp. There will also be 272bhp 3.5-litre and 306bhp 5.0 V8 petrol units. Each will drive all four wheels through the 7G-Tronic auto gearbox.

Meanwhile, Mercedes has launched the biggest vehicle recall in its history. Over the next eight months, the firm will repair and upgrade 1.3million models worldwide. Close to 60,000 UK cars will have work done to fix a host of electronic gremlins, including braking issues.

Affected vehicles are the E-Class, SL and new CLS, built between June 2001 and last month. All other six and eight-cylinder petrol cars manufactured between June 2001 and November 2004 are also being called back. Customers are being informed in writing.
