Rossi resumes island reign

Valentino Rossi continued his love affair with the Phillip Island circuit on Friday afternoon, setting provisional pole position for the Cinzano Australian Grand Prix in a bold statement of supremacy as he looks to complete a successful defence of his MotoGP crown. Despite icy temperatures and rain in the morning, strong winds opened the way for a bright and warm afternoon which saw Rossi stop the clock at 1?30.222.

The current World Champion can seal the title for the fourth time in a row with second place in Sunday?s penultimate round of the season and his effort today dealt an early blow to his only rival, Sete Gibernau, who was 0.378 seconds adrift of the Italian in second place.

Even though Gibernau couldn?t quite keep tabs on Rossi at the top, he was some way clear of Nicky Hayden in third place, with 0.777 seconds separating the Honda pair and a 1.155 gap covering Rossi and Hayden at either end of the provisional front row.

Previous success at this circuit in the World Superbike series seemed to benefit Colin Edwards and Ruben Xaus, who provisionally qualified at the head of the second row in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Xaus? performance was particularly impressive less than a year after a nasty crash here in preseason testing which saw the Spaniard hospitalised. His Ducati colleague Loris Capirossi also made a positive start to the weekend, qualifying sixth fastest at the track where he won his first ever 125cc World Championship back in 1990 to complete the provisional second row.

Marco Melandri escaped unhurt from a crash to qualify tenth fastest whilst home favourite Troy Bayliss, who last night announced that he will not be riding for Ducati beyond the end of the season, had a fall this morning and could only manage the twelfth fastest time in the afternoon.

Bayliss announces Ducati split

Troy Bayliss has announced that he will not be riding with Ducati next year after confirmation that the Italian factory have decided not to extend his contract beyond the end of the current season. The Australian delivered the news on the eve of his home Grand Prix at Phillip Island but expressed his desire to remain in MotoGP.

?It?s been difficult for everyone at Ducati ? we expected to do a lot better this year but it hasn?t happened and it?s taken halfway through the year before we even got going,? said Bayliss. ?Since then we?ve had a bit of bad luck and mine is continuing because I?ve found out I won?t be continuing with Ducati next year.

?It?s like the final kick in the teeth. It?s been a hard year and I?ve done everything I can. I?ve been riding a long time with Ducati and it would be a different story if the bike had been winning every weekend but it hasn?t been doing that so? these things happen, you know.

?You take it on the chin and just because it?s like this it doesn?t mean I?m just going to cruise around for the last couple of races - I want to always do the best I can. We?re staying on to test after this and I?ll do everything I can to try and improve this bike.

?Like I said before I believe in what Ducati can do with a bike and I?m sure they?re going to make this bike work in the future but it?s a shame I?m not going to be here to enjoy it.

?I?m confident in what I can do with myself. I?m a racer and all racers believe in themselves but I would like to stay in MotoGP because I don?t think I?ve shown what I can do and time will tell.

?It?s a bit unclear at the moment how it?s going to turn out but I?m sure that in the next week or two weeks things are going to unfold for me and for a lot of other people as well. As for now I?m in a vicious little circle and hopefully it?s going to straighten itself out.?

Secondo me è un capro espiatorio. Se devono prendere Checa o Hopkins, allora possono tenere Troy. Tanto, con quella moto lì...
Mi dispiace, ma sono cose che capitano nelle corse.
Spero almeno di sbagliarmi a proposito di Hopkins, visto che non lo si è mai visto su una moto competitiva.

hopkins ha del manico secondo me,gibe stava dietro a roberts,hopkins lo batte quotidianamente...direi che va sicuramente più di checa che dimostra di essere un pilota mediocre da almeno 10 anni...volerlo è sciocco!!!posto una foto di hopkins,notate anche il numero... ::)

10 piloti in un secondo di tempo....con le gomme da tempo,sono decisamente livellati i piloti...peccato che con le gomme dure,si veda davvero la differenza!! 8)
sono entusiasta per capirossi...bravo il mio nanetto!! ;D

Ma si, tanto nelle moto la pole conta poco o nulla...a che ora è il GP domani?
